Achelous: 1st appearance: Hercules #1
In Greek mythology, Achelous is the deity of the river of that name, and ruler of all rivers. He is the eldest son of Oceanus and Tethys. He fought with Heracles for Deianira, a Greek princess. Despite assuming many forms, among which that of a bull, Achelous was eventually vanquished. Heracles broke off one of his horns and nymphs fashioned it into the Cornucopia ("horn of plenty"). Achelous is usually depicted as a bull with the torso of a man and a bearded face (common for river gods, especially on coins), but also as an old, grey man with horns.

Alcmena is, as far as it is known, the last mortal woman with whom Zeus lay. When Heracles, fruit of this union, was about to be born, Zeus declared among the gods that the descendant of Perseus then about to see the light should reign over Mycenae. But Hera, disapproving her husband's love affair, persuaded the goddess of childbirth Ilithyia to retard Alcmena's delivery, so that Eurystheus should be born a seven-month child. And since Eurystheus also was a descendant of Perseus, the proclamation of Zeus came to mean, against the god's wish, Eurystheus and not Heracles. In this way, Alcmena's son lost the kingdom of Mycenae and became the subject of his rival. But Alcmena, who in the course of her life, demanded vengeance twice, exacted retribution from Eurystheus.

The deity may also assume the shape of a spider in order to teach wicked men a lesson. Inari is portrayed with a beard and carrying two bundles of rice.

Originally, under the leadership of Brunnhilda, they took mortally wounded human heroes from German and Scandinavian battlegrounds and brought them to Valhalla, an area of the Asgardian dimension where the astral forms of dead Asgardians and human heroes eternally feast and compete in friendly battles. The Valkyries were no longer able to perform this task when Odin, ruler of Asgard, vowed to the Celestials a millennium ago that he would severely restrict Asgardian contact with Earth. In recent years Brunnhilda has become a member of Earth's Defenders. The remaining Valkyries were killed in a war between Odin and Hela over rulership of Valhalla. Odin restored the Valkyries to life after he regained possession of Valhalla, but these Valkyries only have physical form within Valhalla; outside it, they exist only in astral form. Valtrauta has taken Brunnhilda's place as the leader of the Valkyrior, and Hildegarde's sister Krista has filled the role of the ninth Valkyrie, left open since Brunnhilda's departure.
