Origin:  The Man-Beast is the most powerful, and the most evil, of the New Men, animals evolved by the High Evolutionary (HE) into human-like intellects and forms.  Following many successes, HE sought a warrior race to defend his Citadel of Science on Mount Wundagore should mankind lapse into another world war.  HE developed Isotope C, which could endow new Knights of Wundagore with greater strengths.  Isotope C was tested on the first wolf HE had evolved, but an unexpected visit from the Norse god Thor distracted HE, and the creature was left under the Genetic Accelerator too long, evolving to the endpoint of human and lupine evolution.  Hating all life, this Man-Beast attacked Thor and HE, then used the Genetic Accelerator to form its own New Men army.  Joined by HE and the Knights, Thor eventually overpowered Man-Beast, and he and his New Men were forced into a Star Chamber that transported its passengers to the distant galaxy Dromisana.  HE destroyed Isotope C to prevent further such results.

Later, HE exhausted himself creating Counter-Earth (speeding up time on it so as to evolve humanity in hours) on the opposite side of Earth's sun, at which point Man-Beast's minions assaulted HE's ship.  Man-Beast used HE's machinery to guide Counter-Earth's innocent people into violence and sin.  HE awakened and fought Man-Beast, but Man-Beast's minions distracted HE sufficiently for Man-Beast to strike him down.  At that point Him - the genetically engineered humanoid HE had rescued from space - emerged from his cocoon and drove Man-Beast and his minions to flee to Counter-Earth.  HE considered destroying his now-tainted world, but Him convinced HE to allow him to track down Man-Beast and save humanity.  HE gave Him the Soul Gem and the name Adam Warlock.

Meanwhile, Man-Beast prevented the creation of super-heroes on Counter-Earth, except Reed Richards, whose powers lay dormant.  Man-Beast sent the murine Rhodan and his winged Hounds of Helios against Warlock, but the Soul Gem transformed Rhodan back into a normal rat, apparently slain by a barn cat.  Adopting the form of a human known as the Prophet, Man-Beast duped Warlock into following him into the lair of his legions before revealing his true identity.  Hoping to corrupt Warlock to neutralize his control over the Soul Gem, Man-Beast swayed Warlock against Counter-Earth, showing him illusions of its people betraying him, but Warlock recognized the deception.  As the Soul Gem transformed Man-Beast back into a normal wolf, Man-Beast released his astral form, which secretly possessed a man named Rex Carpenter.

Via Man-Beasts' psychic powers, Carpenter became a US presidential hopeful, pretending to befriend Warlock while sending the warthog New Man Triax to attack him.  Ultimately Carpenter revealed his identity to Triax, terrifying him into taking hostage and then killing Warlock's young friend Edward Roberts before Warlock could stop him.  Carpenter was elected president and soon arranged a nuclear test near the San Andreas fault that activated the anti-personnel missiles known as Deathbirds, which assaulted America.  When Warlock stopped the Deathbirds, Carpenter twisted the events and denounced Warlock as a dangerous threat on national TV.  Man-Beast twice transformed Reed Richards into the rampaging Brute, sending him against Warlock who halted his rampages, and Carpenter was forced to reverse his public stance on Warlock.

Carpenter late captured Warlock, then had his minions try to break Warlock's will.  When the Hulk returned to Counter-Earth, Man-Beast's men captured him, then implanted Banner with a micro-transmitter and released him, knowing the Hulk would lead them to Warlock's followers, the Resistance against Carpenter's rule.  Meanwhile, HE sent Rigellian Recorder #211 (aka Memorax) to free Warlock and he joined his followers and the Hulk, but Man-Beast and his minions captured them all and used his psychic powers to make the public beg for Warlock's death, and Carpenter was all too happy to comply; an enraged Hulk broke free and led the Resistance's escape.  Revealing his true identity, Man-Beast prepared the USA's forces for war, but the Hulk - who actually became stronger when assaulted by Man-Beast's hate-stimulating power - defeated him.  A resurrected Warlock returned Man-Beast to wolf form, and he fled, narrowly escaping hunters.  The real Rex Carpenter - whom Man-Beast had released, impersonated and imprisoned - was freed.

Regaining his memory and power, Man-Beast took human form, became and astronaut, and flew a rocket - altered to pierce the time-lag barrier HE had placed around Counter-Earth - to Earth.  Arriving in Vietnam, Man-Beast enlisted smuggler Achmed Korba's aid, while the High Priest of the mysterious Hidden Temple sent his daughter, Sha Shan, to balance and minimize Korba's evil.  These two became Brother Power and Sister Sun and gathered a following, the Legion of Light, with tales of a divine teacher.  Because the irony amused him, Man-Beast adopted the identity of the Hate-Monger while his agents won converts in the name of love.  As the Legion swelled, it attracted the attention of Spider-Man, Razorback, and Flash Thompson, and Man-Beast plotted a slaughter at a Madison Square Garden rally, intending to use the ensuing hated to transmit hate across the planet via TV broadcast, but Spider-Man destroyed the hate amplification device and Man-Beast seemingly died in its explosion.  Recovering hidden under rubble, Man-Beast joined his secret ally Bi-Beast, a monstrous android created by the winged inhuman Avians (Bird People).  After Thor foiled Bi-Beast's effort to build a new Avian city, Man-Beast helped him escape, but their ship was damaged and they were pursued by Thor and Iron Man to Florida's Cape Canaveral.  Defeated, Man-Beast escaped to commandeer a rocket to fly to Counter-Earth, but Thor knocked Man-Beast out into open space.

Man-Beast later sensed when Thanos' Infinity Gauntlet disrupted the stasis field around Counter-Earth - which had been placed within the enigmatic Beyonders' museum.  Counter-Earth's population perished, but Man-Beast (as Omega) saved twelve natives, re-building them as the cyborgs "They" and reprogrammed to hate HE.  Having fluctuated markedly in power and sanity, HE was an easy target until Adam Warlock confronted They, forcing them to question their programming, resulting in their mass self-destruction.  Meanwhile Man-Beast stole four of the Infinity Gems - Mind, Space, Power, and Time - from their guardians.  Fearing direct manipulation of the Gems, Man-Beast technologically channeled their power into a massive creation, the Infinity Thrall, but Warlock goaded the Thrall into destroying the machinery and thus itself, after which Man-Beast fled and Warlock restored the Gems to their guardians.

On Earth, Man-Beast replaced Senator Kyle Munson and gained control of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force, which he directed to assault Monster Island, home of Warlock's Infinity Watch.  When this proved futile, "Munson" mind-controlled the Avengers into attacking the Watch, but Warlock recognized Man-Beast's involvement, exposing and defeating him.  Captain America stopped Warlock - who had learned Man-Beast was irredeemable - from slaying Man-Beast, promising he would never escape prison.  However, Man-Beast escaped almost immediately and - as Karnivore - united disgruntled New Men as the Animutants.  They assaulted Wundagore, and Karnivore nearly slew HE, but Thor and his Godpack allies thwarted the Animutants and Mean-Beast, who fled, only to be captured and sent to the Vault prison.

Meanwhile, HE created a new group of New Men, including the White Tiger, dedicated to Man-Beast's destruction, and Sir Wulf, the first wolf HE had evolved since the Man-Beast.  Certain another wolf would not be trusted, HE disguised Sir Wulf as Lord Anon, within armor that hid his scent.  However, Man-Beast - having escaped the Vault when the U-Foes destroyed its generator - slew and replaced Lord Anon, joining the Knights of Wundagore.  HE and his forces were soon driven from Wundagore by the mutant Exodus, and the hero Quicksilver was appointed the Knights' leader.  While proving valuable in combat, Anon demonstrated progressively more violent and sadistic behavior.  When the rapidly destabilizing HE sought the power of the new Isotope E, Anon secretly plotted to claim it, slaying the canine Lord Churchill who discovered his identity.  During a planned assault to retake Wundagore, Anon overpowered HE, stole Isotope E, and revealed his true form.  Man-Beast teamed with Exodus against the Heroes for Hire and the Knights.  When HE fluctuated into madness and god-like power, Man-Beast convinced the Eternal Thena (one of the Heroes) to join with him and Exodus, stunning HE, but Man-Beast turned his allies' power back on them, dropping them, HE, and quicksilver.  White Tiger attacked and overpowered Man-Beast, and the Isotope E stabilized HE turned Man-Beast back into a wolf.  He escaped yet again.
